Q4: Looking back on Dwarika Hotel's journey so far, what have been some of the biggest challenges and solutions in preserving The Newari Civilization's cultural legacy?
Built as a heritage hotel with the underlying principle of sustainable heritage conservation, preservation, and revival; The Dwarika’s Hotel was founded by a visionary conservationist and a passionate collector of Newari art and artifacts. The hotel we see today is the result of hardships and struggles we had to face in efforts to preserve and promote the Newari civilization’s craft and knowledge.
One of the biggest challenges initially was the lack of awareness and appreciation for the value of the heritage. When my father, Mr. Dwarikas Das Shrestha, started his collection it was considered a sign of poverty rather than a rich representation of culture. Many of the traditional buildings, artifacts, and crafts were being lost or destroyed due to neglect, modernization, and urbanization. To address this challenge, he stuck to his determination and continued on the road he had embarked upon towards conservation of all facets of traditional Newari art. He also worked with local craftsmen and artisans to revive traditional techniques and styles; eventually starting a Heritage and Training Workshop.
Another hurdle was to find a way to showcase these artifacts and architectural masterpieces to a wider audience. This was especially important because tourism was becoming an increasingly important industry in Nepal, and there was a growing demand for cultural experiences. In response to this, he established Dwarika’s Hotel, with the aim of presenting the finest examples of Newari architecture and art. A perfect opportunity to showcase traditional architecture of the Newari community to the world.
At our hotel, we take pride in our dedication to preserve craftsmanship, ensuring that all items are meticulously handmade and locally sourced. However, maintaining consistency in shapes, and design poses a unique challenge.
The intricate process requires constant supervision to ensure that each piece meets the standards of the hotel. Beyond the architectural elements adorning the facade, the Dwarika’s also houses an impressive collection of antique woodwork, furniture, paintings, and artifacts; all of which require special care.
From the moment you step inside, the hotel immerses you in a world of original handcrafted pieces, making the ongoing challenge of its maintenance an essential part of preserving the hotel’s unique ambiance.
Today, Dwarika’s Hotel is recognized as a pioneer hotel for preserving Kathmandu’s heritage and has won numerous awards for its efforts to preserve and promote the Newari civilization’s cultural heritage. The hotel has also inspired other conservation initiatives in Nepal and beyond, and it continues to be a shining example of how heritage preservation can be combined with sustainable tourism.
